墙 Wall

Colonnades are nothing (but) a perforated wall.

The walls and the vertical structure are there to carry the ceiling and roof, guide our movements, enclose our activities, our objects and tools, accommodate us and lead us from one place to another. Walls separate and structure architectural space; they demarcate, protect and by this fact enable us to inhabit. To dwell, according to Martin Heidegger, … means to be at peace, to be brought to peace, to remain in peace. The word for peace, Friede, means the free, das Frye, and fry means: preserved from harm and danger, preserved from something , safeguarded.’

One rarely touches walls, just as when one walks round a table for example, an ‘object-peripheral’ gap remains. The walls are ‘opposite’ our eyes. Their modulation, their texture and their ability to accept the display of messages, play a basic role in determining the character and the atmosphere of a place.

Between walls and ceiling are ‘high walls’ which accept a sublime and untouchable role. According to their design, they may belong more to the wall or more to the ceiling.
